AROMATES: synesthetic & syzygic music compilations

"Tentatives d'épuisement harmonique"

Bouquet garni & OuLiPo

TL;DR: a description of #AROMATES compilations in Season, Episodes and Tracks is summarized in a pdf file, with hyperlinks to the online versions of the songs, when they exist.

A multisensorial journey into shared senses and emotions, dedicated to people I love. Compilations related to time and space, and how my perception of them actually dissolved in the COVID19 pandemic situation. How reality splintered into cast-away realitons. How I could share synesthetic mezze & aromas.lade

The AROMATES compilation journey is filled with synesthesia (synesthetic stories) and syzygies (conjunctive connections). We have recently been through confined lives, for which I initially shared "Confine songs/Chants des confins", to keep in tune & touch with people I could not meet anymore. AROMATES were more demanding. I was in need for more interactions: cooking, having drinks, walking aside, sharing music, listening to contacts, tasting fragrances, smelling kinesthetic touch. This COVID period (as I luckily was affected neither by smell nor taste loss) triggered and enhanced my senses. And triggered  how I missed witty conversations, active walks, joyful drinks, happy meals.

Each episode - with the name of some aromates (say herbs) - forms an acronym with initial artist letters (in bold, oulipesques acrostiches), and generates other intricate links. Language puns and ricochets involved.

AROMATES SEASON 3 : PERFECT PERFUMES OF ROZEMARIJN

Third (and last) season is being prepared; seven episodes on ROZEMARIJN (Dutch) under the aegis of Philip Glass' original soundtrack for Koyaanisqatsi, Life out of balance. Seven fragrances: (pure), Koyaanisqatsi, Vessels, Cloudscape, Pruit Igoe, The Grid, Prophecies. A glimpse of the original grid:

AROMATES SEASON 2 : CORUSCANT CRUMBS

Second season is there..

AROMATES Season 2, Episode  5 : coruscant crumbs of ROSEMARY

  • Artists: Rouge, Orange Blossom (on Erik Satie), Shivaree (on Brian Eno), Eagle*Seagull, Microfilm, Aram Khachaturian, Röyksopp; Yom
  • Synesthetic story: "Now we checked out this duck quack, Who laid a big egg, oh so black, It shone just like gold", lyrics from Brian Eno's song "The fat lady of Limbourg" (here by Shivaree). This AROMATES reminds us (Röyksopp) of a witch's circle initiated in SEASON 1: some embroidery and weaving on the Simon & Garfunkel song: "Scarborough fair/canticle", on the rhyme: "parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme". The gist of the now-closed musical box of SEASON 1. The philter did not work, whatever its colors, whether black, orange (Orange Blossom) or red (Rouge). However,  a reborn-self (Yom, Elegy to the new-born) will fly on Seagull/Eagle wings to the Moon (2001 space odyssey's adagio ballet from Aram Khachaturian) and beyond, maybe to Earth (as expressed by Microfilm dramatic landing... on Earth)
  • Conjunctive connections: opening (by closing) of S01E01 (the series' pilot) by Genesis' "Musical box"; S01E03 "Petroselinum" (parsley in Latin); S01E04, S01E05, S01E06, S01E07, S01E08 on five different aspects of time: THYME, THYME-elements, THYME-pieces, THYME-breath, TIN-fins (TIN is "thyme" in briton/brezhoneg), as there will be five flavours of ROSEMARY; three sage/sauge/salvia flavors in S02E02: Anton Eger' Monolith (2001, a space odyssey) shortly balanced (Le Orme) by several references to Blade Runner (Senor Coconuts' robots, Arandel, UNKLE, Garcia-Fons' moon), Interzone's Erik Satie, la luna rossa (Goblin's profondo rosso). This AROMATES was composed in a 2021 May journey across Brittany/Armor including Nantes and Douarnenez, where the Nantes band "Orange Blossom" popped up (by Laurent B.). I discovered the mesmerizing voice of Shivaree (aka Ambrosia Parsley, not a coincidence with S01E03 PETROSELINUM) long ago with the heartbreaking hit: "Goodnight moon", with "a shark in the pool and a witch in the tree"; witches were connected to the initial "parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme" brew

AROMATES Season 2, Episode 1 : coruscant crumbs of PAPRIKA

AROMATES SEASON 1 : SEPIA BLUE

One day... This was the very first season of AROMATES, fully dedicated. The pilot for SEASON 1 was GARLIC. Then, the plot evolved into a choral fireworks of mezze, dishes, colors, odors, tastes, sounds, mostly feelings. A common backbone was Simon & Garfunkel song: "Scarborough fair/canticle", on the rhyme: "parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme". With some wizardry below it. "Sepia blue" refers to photographs taken at dawn and walks, old pictures faded away and cyanography, and its nice phonetic sound.

AROMATES Season 1, Episode 9 : sepia blue bonuses

  • Artists: (no acrostic meaning here) Genesis; Yusuf/Cat Stevens; Navarone (on Deep Purple); Radiohead; Ilene Barnes; Nits; Jeanne Cherhal; Heather Nova (on Neil Young); Meute
  • Synesthetic story:
  • Conjunctive connections: on the beach, purple
  • TarBall: ask me
  • YouTube: AROMATES S01E09, sepia blue bonuses.

AROMATES Season 1, Episode 7 : sepia blue, songs of THYME breath

AROMATES Season 1, Episode 4 : sepia blue, songs of THYME

  • Synesthetic story:
  • Conjunctive connections:
  • TarBall: ask me

AROMATES Season 1, Episode 3 : sepia blue, songs of PETROSELINUM

  • Artists: Park, jiha; Efterklang; Texier, henry; Rodrigo y gabriela (on Pink Floyd Echoes); Offering, the; Surman, john  [alternative short version]; Eicher, stephan; Lema, ray and de wilde, laurent; Ibrahim, abdullah; Neve, jef (trio); Mr le baron (patrick sapin) [not available on youtube]
  • Synesthetic story: it started after one insomnia with "The longing of the yawning divide", by Jiha Park
  • Conjunctive connections:
  • TarBall: ask me
  • YouTube: AROMATES S01E03, songs of PETROSELINUM.

AROMATES Season 1, Episode 2 : sepia blue, songs of ORIGANO

  • Artists: Opeth; Romano, sclavis, texier; Ibeyi & benjamin biolay (on Chet Baker); Guðnadóttir, hildur; Alphane moon; Nits, the; Oiseaux-tempête
  • Synesthetic story: does the function makes the organ? Or the converse. The second AROMATES opus starts with a call from the abyss: "Persephone" by swedish metal band Opeth, with a bold progressive rock move. "Annobon" (a volcano in Gabon) is part of the "Carnets de route" by Aldo Romano, Louis Sclavis, Henri Texier et le photographe Guy Le Querrec, and was a jingle for France Culture "Nuits magnétiques". An interesting version of Chet Baker's "Moon and Sand" follows, by beautiful duet Ibeyi and a discrete Benjamin Biolay on trumpet. We are then in "Elevation" with icelandic cellist Hildur Guðnadóttir. Alphane Moon and our Glassie Azoth pushes us "Further", reminiscent of our attempt to adapt P. K. Dick's "Clans of the Alphane moon" into a filmed theatre play. "A touch of Henry Moore" is a percussive version of the dutch band The Nits: I walked in NYC to watch this reclining figure a while ago. Final piece is the "Ouroboros" by french band Oiseaux-tempête, with barking dogs and weird atmosphere
  • Conjunctive connections: P. K. Dick robots or their Blade Runners will be noticeable on S02E02 (Arandel, UNKLE, Senor coconut). Witchcraft would appear again in S01E03 (John Surman's wizard song); yet this remains the overval structure of the parsley/sage/rosemary/thyme brew. Africa from the "Carnets de route" is back again in Omar Sosa's "Promised Land" ("First negros did not come to America as slaves; They came as explorers", S02E02) or in Richard Bona and Bobby McFerrin (improvisation in S01E06)
  • TarBall: ask me
  • YouTube: AROMATES S01E02, songs of ORIGANO.

AROMATES Season 1, Episode 1 : sepia blue, songs of GARLIC

  • Artists: Genesis; Amandine; Radiohead; Laïs; Ilene barnes; Cherhal, jeanne
  • Synesthetic story: "if there is garlic in some recipe, triple the dose of it". To do, garlic is one of the bases of DNA for cooking, along with olive oil, pepper and some cheese. In french, I'd say "l'aïl égale l'ADN".
  • Conjunctive connections: this aromatic "Musical box" (aka SEASON 01, Sepia Blue) opened with the famous eponymous Genesis song, from "Nursery crime" (1971): "she's a lady, she's got thyme", they said (to my French ears). It closes with the last tune of S01E08 by Nils Frahm, "Said and done", which I did and uttered. S01E09 bonuses contain a great live version in Brussels, Belgium. Amandine's "For all the marbles" is a  sweet, chocolate androman(ian) pastry to soothe (anaesthetic) the place where "our (my) hearts collide", in the context of a sudden deficiency in almost-pure cacao shared times; and thyme will return soon, from S01E04 to S01E08 (songs of THYME, THYME elements, THYME pieces, THYME breath, and TIN - thyme in brezhoneg/breton). We will find both a fantastic electro cover of Radiohead's "Arpeggi/weird fishes" in S02E03 by Kelly Lee Owens ("Arpeggi"), and the stunning video made by Tobias Strech in S01E09 bonuses. The diving motto "In the deepest ocean, The bottom of the sea, Your eyes, They turn me, Why should I stay here? Why should I stay?" is again in the scuba TIN fins (in Vannes) of S01E08. Then, we get "eaten by the worms" even before the end of the world ("De wereld vergaat") sang in flemmish by the Laïs trio voices: "Ja de wereld vergaat//Yeah, the world will come to an end". For the clock is ticking in "Time" by Ilene Barnes. Even with some warning signs in "Un trait danger, deux traits sécurité" by Jeanne Cherhal. A powerful electro version of the latter is found in S01E09, from Woodstower festival in 2010.
