Signal and image classification with invariant descriptors (scattering transforms): Internship

[Internship position closed]

Application and additional details

Description

The field of complex data analysis (data science) is interested in the extraction of suitable indicators used for dimension reduction, data comparison or classification. Initially based on application-dependent, physics-based descriptors or features, novel methods employ more generic and potentially multiscale descriptors, that can be used for machine learning or classification. Examples are to be found in SIFT-like (scale-invariant feature transform) techniques (ORB, SURF), in unsupervised or deep learning. The present internship focuses on the framework of scattering transform (S. Mallat et al.) and the associated classification techniques. It yields signal, image or graph representations with invariance properties relative to data-modifying transformations: translation, rotation, scale… Its performances have been well-studied for classical data (audio signals, image databases, handwritten digit recognition).

This internship aims at dealing with lesser studied data: identification of the closest match to a template image inside a database of underground models, extraction of suitable fingerprints from 1D spectrometric signals from complex chemical compounds for macroscopic chemometric property learning.

The stake in the first case resides in the different scale and nature of template and model images, the latter being sketch- or cartoon-like versions of the templates. In the second case, signals are composed of a superposition of hundreds of (positive) peaks. Their nature differs from standard information processed by scattering transforms. A focus on one of the proposed applications can be considered, depending on success or difficulties met.

Learning meets compression: small-data-science internship (IFPEN)

Internship subject: [french/english]
Many experimental designs acquire continuous or salve signals or images. Those are characteristic of a specific phenomenon. One may find examples at IFPEN in seismic data/images, NDT/NDE acoustic emissions (corrosion, battery diagnosis) engine benches (cylinder pressure data, fast camera), high-thoughput screening in chemistry. Very often, such data is analyzed with standardized, a priori indices. Comparisons between different experiments (difference- or classification-based) are often based on the same indices, without resorting to initial measurements.

The increasing data volume, the variability in sensor and sampling, the possibility of different pre-processing yield two problems: the management and access to data (« big data ») and their optimal exploitation by dimension reduction methods, supervised or unsupervised learning (« data science »). This project aims at the analysis of the possibility of a joint compressed representation of data and the extraction of pertinent indicators, at different characteristic scales, and the relative impact of the first aspect (lossy compression degradation) over the second aspect (precision and robustness of extracted feature indicators).

The internship possesses a dual goal. The first aspect will be dealing with scientific research on sparse signal/image representations with convolution networks based on multiscale wavelet techniques, called scattering networks. Their descriptors (or footprints) possess fine translation, rotation and scale invariance. Those descriptors will be employed for classification and detection. The second aspect will carry on the impact of lossy compression on the preceeding results, and the development of novel sparse representations for joint compression and learning.

Upcoming conferences (concern Fees) - The latent ones

Saint-Malo Intra-Muros.
I went like an "animal sot" to Saint-Malo (Brittany) and returned enchanted by the 2010 edition of the Latent Variable Analysis and Independant Component Analysis (LVA-ICA 2010). The four excellent keynote/plenary speeches:
  • When tensor decomposition meets compressed sensing, by Pierre Comon (University of Nice, France), admittedly with an ad-like title, more akin to coherence than CS;
  • Discrimination with deformation for classification, by Stéphane Mallat (Ecole Polytechnique, France), when mapping complex wavelet coefficients to the lower frequencies yields a scattering metric;
  • Bayesian non-negative matrix factorisation methods to detect dye labelled DNA oligonucleotides in multiplexed Raman spectra, by Mark Girolami (University of Glasgow, UK);
  • 2nd order statistics + A 3rd data dimension = Just weight and see!, by Arie Yeredor (Tel-Aviv University, Israel);
should be webcasted soon (stay tuned, i got audio bootlegs for personal use). Meanwhile, the next LVA/ICA 2012 will be held in Spring 2012 in Tel Aviv, Israel (see SIVA conferences). An internship is proposed in 2011 at IFP Energies nouvelles on that peculiar domain.
